Last year Google sent shockwaves through the marketing community by announcing that it would soon be elevating mobile-optimized sites in their search algorithms. This was dubbed by many marketers as “Mobilegeddon” and was the talk of the marketing and business community for several months.
This change hit those with strong competition the hardest. Now, Website Magazine is reporting that to give publishers even more of an incentive to offer mobile-friendly pages, Google has announced that, in May, it will increase the importance of having a mobile page. Sites that are not mobile-friendly will rank even lower than before.
For business owners and marketers that read this and think to themselves, “Maybe it’s time we developed a mobile site,” it’s probably time you made this a priority instead of just keeping it on the back burner. Your prospects will pass you by and find your competitors if you don’t take action. Chances are, if your current site isn’t optimized for mobile, it’s been awhile since you have updated your website design—giving you even more of an incentive to update your website.
Making a change to your website is a big decision, and if you aren’t already convinced that you need to make these changes, consider the following.
If you have been working on increasing your online visibility through search engine optimization (SEO) and have had some success, you don’t want all of that effort to go to waste due a simple algorithm update from Google. What you want to do is to make sure you have a site that’s easy to navigate and optimized for mobile so when a prospect does find your website, you are able to offer a great user experience and generate a new lead.
For sales managers and marketers that don’t think that redesigning your website in response to the news from Google is necessary, think about this: What would happen if the traffic that Google used to send to your site is now sent to your top competitor that just updated their website? What would that do to your business and long term profitability?
Because the need for having a mobile-optimized site has become imperative, now might be a great time to have the discussion about redesigning or developing a new website to match current web design trends and to plan for the additional changes coming to Google’s search rankings.
